West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre
Temporary bamboo theatres were erected for days or weeks to celebrate a festival or an event, and become a social gathering place where Chinese opera would be performed.
The bamboo theatre brings back a disappearing cultural heritage in Hong Kong that had its hay days in the 1950’s. Temporary bamboo theatres were erected for days or weeks to celebrate a festival or an event, and become a social gathering place where Chinese opera would be performed.
Celebrating Chinese New Year in February 2013, this theatre seats 800 people and is entirely erected of bamboo and timber logs using a hand tied technique. It measures 57m x 40m x 16m high, with a column free span of 25 meters. The exterior are cladded with festive colorful banners and formed the centre of a market place where people gather prior to the performance.
The construction was entirely sustainable. The structure was erected for 2 weeks and taken down. All bamboo members were recycled and reused for other scaffolding projects.
