The lobby was in the basement complete with a huge floor plate of 8300 sq. ft. of relatively unused cafes and retail which became luggage re-packing area for tourist. However, due to recent competitions and a need to upgrade for a more international clientele leading up to the Olympics in 2020, warrants a complete renovation of the public area.

With a tight budget in mind, the renovation started with a complete replanning to maximize the usage of the space, creating a new casual restaurant “the Station”, featuring a grab and go island pantry with sit down services and a long table for large groups. LED monitors broadcast the departure information from the train station.

A quiet guest lounge was also created next to the check in counters. Overall, an “artificial Zen nature” concept was used throughout to create an artificial green environment to complement the synthetic nature of the vibrant Shinjuku district in Tokyo where Godzilla and Robotic waiters are the local attractions.
